چکیده

The field performance of a geotechnical structures including its failure mechanism should be evaluated in detail before construction in order to minimize the possibility of potential failure. In this paper, the application of soil nailing system is documented in a detailed based on case study in the north of Tehran, Iran. The total excavation depth for a 15 storey residual building wall brought the cut face close to 12 m. The diameter of nails was 28 mm and their lengths were varied between 8 to 10 m with inclination of 7 degree to the horizontal plane. A series of numerical modelling was conducted to evaluate the deformation during the excavation process using finite difference method (FDM FLAC 2D) and finite element method (FEM PLAXIS 2D). In the modelling process, the pattern of wall deflection was simulated with shotcrete facing. A good agreement has been observed between the results of both methods when the pattern of deformation in the first and the last steps of excavation were simulated. Based on the maximum vertical displacement of shotcrete facing, calculated by two methods, the results obtained by FEM were closer to the field measurement. However, a good agreement has been observed between the values of factor of safety which were calculated by FLAC 2D and PLAXIS 2D, for different stages of excavation.

Numerical investigation on the pullout shear strength of soil-nail interface using finite element method

Soil nailing is a popular reinforcement method for stabilizing slopes, excavations, and retaining walls in many countries. The pullout capacity of the soil-nail interface is a critical parameter for the design and safety assessment of soil-nailed systems. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model is developed using the commercial program ABAQUS to simulate the pullout te...

Performance evaluation of modified bentlegPlow using finite element approach

ABSTRACT-This paper aims to develop a new design of a bentleg (BL) plow and to determine its performance as compared to the conventional one using finite element approach. The difference between the modified and conventional BL plows is the direction of angle between the projection of cutting blade on horizontal plane normal to plow shank and the line perpendicular to the plow shank in the same...

An Investigation on the Behavior of Retaining Structure of Excavation Wall Using Obtained Result from Numerical Modeling and Monitoring Approach. (A Case Study of International "Narges Razavi 2 Hotel", Mashhad)

With the growing population and density in metropolitan areas, higher tendency to live in high-rise buildings, and increasing demand for parking lots, it seems necessary to excavate soil to construct underground spaces. During excavation work, as the height of the wall increases, special care should be taken to the wall stabilization to avoid any consequent damage including extensive property d...

A Continuum Shell-beam Finite Element Modeling of Buried Pipes with 90-degree Elbow Subjected to Earthquake Excitations

In the current work, the seismic analysis of bent region in buried pipes is performed, and effects of soil properties and modeling methods on pipe’s response are investigated. To do this task Beam, Beam-Shell Finite Element modeling and a Continuum shell FE models of a 90 degrees elbow are employed. In the Beam model, the pipe is simulated by beam elements while combined shell-beam elements a...
